In October 2018, Greenpeace Unearthed published an investigation into what happens to the waste that we put into our recycling bins in the UK – they had found mountains of British rubbish in illegal dumps in Malaysia. Since then, the Malaysian government has begun turning back container ships bringing recyclable waste, Thailand and India have announced bans on the import of plastic waste from overseas, and China has tightened it regulations on what kinds of waste it will accept into the country for recycling.

Viridor is “one of the UK’s leading recycling, resource and waste management companies”. At a SERA event in Brighton, Viridor’s Commercial Director Paul Ringham outlined some of the challenges that the waste management and recycling industry is facing, including dodgy waster exporters and an understanding amongst the UK public about how to sort their recycling that is getting worse, not better.
